The Great Ginger Build of 2018

Welcome to our 1st annual Great Ginger Build where we challenge local middle school students to create edible pieces of art inspired by 2018’s chosen holiday theme, Holiday by the Sea.  We invite students to flex their imagination in baking and explore different aspects of STEM, such as engineering (ie. structural, material), chemistry, math, and most importantly teamwork, channeling all into a Ginger Build. 

The event will be an opportunity to showcase their work and compete against other other ginger builds from other teams and schools for various awards.  The first, second, and third prize winners will be judged by a special panel of five (5) judges on a set of predetermined criteria while The People’s Choice Award will be given to the Ginger Build that receives the most votes from the public.  It is free for the public to view displays, but to vote, it is $2 per ticket.   Buy $10 worth and get the 6th one for free.   This the fundraising piece for the Organization.  If Ginger Builders elect to have their creation in the silent auction, 80% of proceeds raised in the auction will go back to their school’s PTA.

The panel of judges will award:

1st Place: $300
2nd Place: $200
3rd Place: $100

Judging by the special panel of five(5) will start at 3pm, awards will be given at 4pm, silent auction awards will be given out 4:15pm.

Funds raised from this event will be going towards The Helpers Organization’s Homeless Prevention Program. Launching in 2019, we plan to help the neediest of Hampton Roads families by keeping them within their homes by paying partial rents, mortgages and utilities, and provide services, such as tenant-landlord mediation.

The Helpers Organization is a 100% volunteer 501(c)(3) nonprofit that assist the homeless and low income families of Hampton Roads by addressing the needs of affordable housing, economic development, and neighborhood revitalization.  We provide free referral & case management services, and provide financial assistance. We also have a Lunch On Us initiative, where, once a month, we use donated food items to prep and distribute sandwiches to homeless shelters around the seven cities.
